SOUTHFIELD, Mich., Nov. 20 (UPI) -- A Michigan law firm will pay the U.S. government $131,000 to settle claims it illegally sent money to John Edwards' 2004 presidential campaign, papers show.

After reaching the settlement with Southfield, Mich., law firm Fieger, Fieger, Kenney, Johnson and Giroux, and partners Geoffrey Nels Fieger and Vernon R. Johnson, the Federal Elections Commission said Friday it wouldn't take any action against the firm or the individuals.

The FEC said the agreement was reached after it found probable cause that the firm reimbursed 66 employees and other individuals who donated a total of $131,000 to the Edwards campaign.

Edwards, a former U.S. senator from North Carolina, wound up being the Democratic vice presidential candidate in 2004 and also ran unsuccessfully for president in 2008. His political future has been derailed by his acknowledgment he had an extramarital affair in 2006.
