WASHINGTON, Nov. 20 (UPI) -- A House committee has approved a bill that would ban the importation of low-level nuclear waste to the United States.
The legislation would stop EnergySolutions of Salt Lake City from importing 20,000 tons of waste from Italy, The Salt Lake Tribune reported. Rep. Jim Matheson, D-Utah, sponsored the bill.
The 34-12 vote Thursday in the House Energy and Commerce Committee was largely along party lines, with Democrats supporting a ban and most Republicans opposing it. Critics said the bill would interfere with the U.S.-Italian trade relationship.
A court ruled Utah and the Northwest Compact, a nuclear waste consortium, do not have the authority to stop EnergySolutions. The decision is being appealed.
Matheson expects to have enough votes to pass the bill, the newspaper said.
