NEW YORK, Nov. 19 (UPI) -- A 16-year-old boy is one of five suspected gang members charged in the shooting of a 14-year-old girl in New York, authorities said.
The New York Daily News said Thursday Carvett Gentles, 16, was charged as an adult, facing charges of attempted murder, assault and criminal use of a gun in the shooting of Vada Vasquez, 15.
Facing identical charges for Monday's shooting are Rohan Francis, 18; Cleve Smith, 20; Clivie Smith, 19; and Dwayne Taylor, 23. All five are suspected members of the violent Gorilla Stone Blood street gang.
Police said Vasquez was an innocent bystander during an attack on Tyrone Creighton, 19. Police suspect the five young men were targeting Creighton in a jailhouse dispute, the Daily News said.
The New York Times said of the six shots fired in Monday's incident, one hit Creighton in the shoulder and another hit Vasquez in the head.
Police Commissioner Raymond W. Kelly said Vasquez was placed in a medically induced coma in the wake of the shooting.
