WORCESTER, Mass., Nov. 18 (UPI) -- The son of the late U.S. Sen. Edward Kennedy, D-Mass., says his father would have sought a compromise on abortion language in healthcare reform measures.
Ted Kennedy Jr. said the debate over whether to support the overhaul if it includes restrictions on providing insurance for abortion procedures would have prompted his father to consider moving forward, even with the restrictions, The Boston Globe reported Wednesday.
"He wouldn't have wanted to go backward on reproductive rights, but he thought that perfect is the enemy of good," Kennedy told the newspaper in an interview. "And if you have a good bill you should pass that and not wait for the most perfect piece of legislation."
Kennedy, a 48-year-old Connecticut lawyer and investment executive, also told the Globe he would not endorse a candidate in the four-way Democratic primary in the race to fill his father's seat. The contenders have varying views on abortion.
"It's hard for me to get excited, honestly, about (the race), because it's a tough emotional time," Kennedy told the newspaper, saying it might be different if he lived in Massachusetts.
