FERRUM, Va., Nov. 18 (UPI) -- A Ferrum College student killed in a hunting accident was remembered in a memorial service Wednesday at the Virginia school, observers said.
Students gathered at Vaughn Chapel to remember Jessica "Jess" Goode, 23, who was fatally shot in the chest while she and two other students were collecting frogs along a county-owned trail for a biology class, The Roanoke (Va.) Times reported.
Another Ferrum College student, Regis Boudinot, 20, was shot in the hand.
Jason David Cloutier, 31, of Ferrum, Va., has been charged with manslaughter, reckless handling of a firearm and trespassing in connection with the incident, authorities said.
Goode's aunt, Harriet Smith, told the Times her niece was an outdoors enthusiast who was fond of kayaking near Winchester, Va., where her parents lived.
"You can almost always count on seeing Jess out on the water," she said, noting that the young woman's Facebook page depicts her with her kayak at Lake Holiday in northern Virginia.
