Fugitive undone by seat belt violation

MIAMI, Nov. 14 (UPI) -- A 66-year-old man wanted for 20 years on money-laundering and tax evasion charges was captured in Florida thanks to a seat belt violation, authorities said.

U.S. marshals used the simple traffic citation to locate and capture Plinio Enrique Del Valle in Miami-Dade County so he could face the federal charges from two decades ago, The Miami Herald reported Friday.

Del Valle received the citation in 2008 while traveling as a passenger in his wife's car.

He was wanted since skipping out on a 1989 arraignment while free on bond, choosing instead to flee to his native Colombia.

U.S. marshals allege Del Valle later returned to the United States, but stayed off authorities' radar by being paid in cash for jobs in New Jersey and New York.

The Herald said Del Valle, who was arrested Tuesday, is to have a bond hearing Monday.
