NEW YORK, Nov. 13 (UPI) -- Big waves and high winds continued to batter the mid-Atlantic coast Friday as New Jersey, Delaware and Virginia called up the National Guard for relief work.
Some areas had wind gusts close to hurricane strength as the remains of Hurricane Ida fed a coastal storm, creating a full-blown nor'easter, AccuWeather.com reported.
By late afternoon Friday, the storm was starting to ease. Forecasters said wind, rain and high waves would continue into Saturday from northeast North Carolina to New Jersey but the storm would head out to sea instead of moving northeast, sparing coastal New England.
At least five deaths were blamed on the storm, including a surfer who drowned in New York City, car crashes in Virginia and people crushed by falling trees in North Carolina. Three New Jersey men were missing after their scallop boat went down Wednesday.
A state of emergency was declared in Cape May County in New Jersey. The governors of Virginia, Delaware and New York called up some members of the National Guard to help with evacuations using trucks designed to operate in high water, the u.S. Defense Department reported.
