Wingsuit flier killed in crash

LAKE ELSINORE, Calif., Nov. 12 (UPI) -- A 40-year-old skydiver from Boston died in a late "fun jump" in California after being part of a team that set a record for wingsuit formations, officials said.

Stephen Millard Harrington crashed to his death about 5 p.m. PST Wednesday near Lake Elsinore, The Riverside Press-Enterprise reported. Harrington hit the tail of the plane as he began his jump, the Riverside County coroner's office said.

Harrington was wearing a wingsuit during the fatal jump. The wingsuit includes fabric from the arms to the torso and between the legs, creating an airfoil shape allowing the wearer to glide through the air. The flight ends with a parachute jump to the ground.

Taya Weiss of Raise the Sky, a wingsuit organization, said Harrington participated earlier Wednesday in a formation flight by 68 people, breaking the record for wingsuit formations.
