RICHMOND, Va., Nov. 12 (UPI) -- Amtrak said Thursday it suspended rail service between Richmond, Va., and Newport News, Va., after a collision between two freight trains.

The railway company said in a release the collision and subsequent derailment of two CSX freight trains Thursday morning resulted in both tracks through the area being blocked.

The (Norfolk) Virginian-Pilot said restoration of rail services between the two Virginia cities is not expected to take place Thursday.

Amtrak urged its customers to make alternative travel arrangements and the train operator confirmed it has already made limited alternate transportation accommodations for some travelers.
