OXFORD, Miss., Nov. 11 (UPI) -- The chancellor of the University of Mississippi has asked the marching band to quit playing a song with supposed segregationist overtones at Ole Miss games.

Chancellor Dan Jones said in a recent letter to fans that "From Dixie with Love" had been prompting fans to chant, "The South will rise again," which could be taken as offensive.

The Memphis (Tenn.) Commercial-Appeal said Wednesday that the chant has been associated by some with the segregationist period in Mississippi. Jones said that link was enough that the song should be shelved.

"We cannot even appear to support those outside our community who advocate a revival of segregation," Jones said in his letter. "We cannot fail to respond."
