SAN FRANCISCO, Nov. 11 (UPI) -- A San Francisco lawmaker is threatening to take Mayor Gavin Newsom to court unless a compromise is reached over changing the city's sanctuary ordinance.
David Campos of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors says the board may fight the mayor in court if he carries through on his threat to ignore Tuesday's override of his veto of a change in the sanctuary law, the San Francisco Chronicle reported Wednesday.
Newsom vetoed legislation that changed the city's policy of turning undocumented juveniles over to federal authorities upon arrest to one requiring that the juveniles be turned over only after they're convicted of a felony.
He said the ordinance, now set to take effect in 30 days, conflicts with federal law.
Campos said just because Newsom personally believes that undocumented youth should be turned over upon arrest, he can't ignore supervisors' legislation.
Unless a compromise can be struck, Camps says the board may fight the mayor in court.
