Ex-Kentucky lawmaker jailed in slaying

LEXINGTON, Ky., Nov. 11 (UPI) -- Kentucky prosecutors declined to say if they would seek the death penalty for a former state lawmaker indicted in the killing of his ex-girlfriend.

Steve Nunn, R-Glasgow, who spent 16 years in the General Assembly, was charged Tuesday in Fayette County with the Sept. 11 shooting of Amanda Ross in Lexington, Ky.

Commonwealth Attorney Ray Larson refused to comment on whether he had made a decision to seek the death penalty should Nunn be convicted.

The (Louisville, Ky.) Courier-Journal reported the 57-year-old Nunn was lodged in jail Wednesday pending his Nov. 19 arraignment.

Nunn was arrested shortly after Ross, 29, was shot at his parent's cemetery plot where he had slashed his wrists in an apparent suicide attempt. Nunn's father was Gov. Louie Nunn.

The Courier-Journal said the two-page indictment, based on testimony from a Lexington police detective and Nunn's two adult daughters, contained few details about the evidence.
