Detroit police may get alleged drug cash

DETROIT, Nov. 11 (UPI) -- Detroit Police Chief Warren Evans says his department may get a portion of $662,000 in cash seized in a major drug bust this week.

Evans said the money was confiscated from an illegal immigrant from Mexico, along with an unspecified amount of marijuana and cocaine, the Detroit Free Press reported Wednesday.

"The money seizure obviously keeps it from recirculating in the drug business," Evans said Tuesday.

Authorities would not identify the suspect, who reportedly is in his 30s and currently is in the custody of the Border Patrol.

Evans said the suspect was arrested at a Detroit motel overnight Monday based on a tip about suspicious dealings at the site.

Police officers allegedly witnessed the suspect, along with several unidentified associates, place a duffel bag filled with cash into a vehicle. Marijuana and cocaine were also found in the vehicle, Evans alleges.

The Free Press said if Detroit police are allowed to keep a portion of the seized money it would be used to improve the department's narcotics unit.
