MEMPHIS, Nov. 10 (UPI) -- Ten University of Memphis fraternities are on two-week suspension from social activities as a warning about inappropriate behavior, university officials said.
A workshop on Nov. 23 will be held to discuss issues, and each fraternity is required to meet with school officials to have its suspension lifted, The Memphis Commercial Appeal reported Tuesday.
"We've had really a number of things (prompt this action). Truly, almost all of the fraternities in the last month or so have had situations that shouldn't have happened," Dean of Students Bill Porter told the newspaper.
In mid-October, members of an unidentified fraternity were charged with misdemeanor theft and public intoxication after pledges allegedly stole a statue from the porch of a home.
In another incident, fraternity members allegedly spray-painted swastikas on the house of the Jewish fraternity, Zeta Beta Tau.
The fraternities that have been suspended are Pi Kappa Phi, Kappa Alpha, Sigma Chi, Sigma Alpha Epsilon, Sigma Phi Epsilon, Alpha Tau Omega, Phi Gamma Delta, Lambda Chi Alpha, Zeta Beta Tau and Pi Kappa Alpha.
