TEMPLE, Texas, Nov. 9 (UPI) -- The first soldier shot in the rampage at Ford Hood, Texas, tried to seek safety only to be followed by the gunman and shot again, the victim's family said.
Army Pfc. Najee Hull, 21, of Homewood, Ill., was recovering Monday in Scott and White Hospital in Temple, Texas, where 10 of those injured in Thursday's attack were taken, the Chicago Tribune reported Monday.
Hull was completing paperwork for deployment to Afghanistan when he was shot in the knee, said Sheila Hull-Smith, Hull's aunt. He crawled under a cubicle but the gunman followed him and shot him twice in the back, Hull-Smith said.
Hull improved enough during the weekend to be moved from intensive care but was still heavily sedated and having trouble breathing, relatives told the Chicago SouthTown Star in a story published Monday.
Thirteen people were killed and 30 others wounded before the alleged shooter, Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan, was shot by police. Hasan, who was in stable condition in an Army hospital, has yet to be charged with the shootings.
