KANSAS CITY, Mo., Nov. 9 (UPI) -- A 23-year-old Kansas City man has been charged with statutory rape after signing a marriage contract with the family of a 14-year-old girl, police said.

Vincent Mosby signed the contract and paid a dowry to the girl's father before a Muslim marriage ceremony was held Aug. 4, police told The Kansas City Star in a story published Monday.

Under Missouri state law, Mosby would not have been able to legally marry the girl without a judge's order because she is a minor.

Relatives of the girl who opposed the marriage alerted police in late August and took the girl to live with them to protect her from further alleged sexual abuse by Mosby, police said.

Two days after Mosby allegedly threatened the relatives, someone fired three shots into the home of the girl's aunt Sept. 9. No one was hurt.

Mosby was arraigned Saturday on one count of statutory rape and ordered held on a $100,000 cash-only bond.
