TAMPA, Fla., Nov. 9 (UPI) -- A father cleaning guns after target practice with his 32-year-old daughter accidentally shot and killed her, police in Tampa, Fla., said.
Stephen Kupferberg, 65, and his daughter Melissa Kupferberg, an investigator in the federal public defender's office in Tampa, spent Saturday morning at a local shooting range and returned to her home to clean the guns, police said.
Stephen Kupferberg, who was visiting from Maryland, was cleaning a Glock Model 34 when it discharged, hitting his daughter in the upper body. She was pronounced dead shortly after arriving at the hospital, The St. Petersburg (Fla.) Times reported Monday.
Tampa police, in a statement released Sunday, said they found "no sign this was anything but a tragic accident."
Melissa Kupferberg was considered a rising star in her office and was writing a book about approaches to investigations, said Donna Elm, the federal defender for the middle district of Florida.
