LONG BEACH, Calif., Nov. 6 (UPI) -- Two 16-year-olds were charged as adults Friday with fatally shooting a female honors student and wounding two men near a school in Long Beach, Calif.

Police say Melody Ross, 16, was an innocent bystander shot during a confrontation between two gangs after the Oct. 30 homecoming football game at Woodrow Wilson High School, the Los Angeles Times reported.

Tom Vinson and Daivion Davis have each been charged with one count of murder and two counts of attempted murder, and bail has been set at $3 million.

Two men, an 18-year-old and a 20-year-old, were wounded in the shootings.

Davis pleaded innocent Friday, and the arraignment was postponed for Vinson, the Long Beach Press-Telegram reported. If convicted, the suspects face a maximum sentence of life in prison.

The diverse school draws students from some of Long Beach's most affluent communities.
