MEMPHIS, Nov. 6 (UPI) -- A 16-year-old girl who was babysitting five children in Memphis when a 10-month-old child suffered fatal injuries is facing murder charges, authorities say.
Jasmine Malone was charged with first-degree murder in the alleged aggravated child abuse death of Wynter Roberts, who stopped breathing after falling off a bed last weekend, The (Memphis) Commercial Appeal reported Thursday.
Roberts was left in Malone's care last Saturday. Officials said they were told the infant was unresponsive after falling from a bed and was rushed to an area hospital.
The infant died at Le Bonheur Children's Medical Center in Memphis Sunday. The Shelby County Medical Examiner's Office determined the child died of blunt-force trauma.
The Commercial Appeal said Roberts' death marked the fourth time this year a Memphis infant's death while in the custody of caregivers was ruled a homicide.
In addition to those cases, there have been at least four instances in which deliberate or accidental caregiver actions resulted in the deaths of local children age 2-3.
