Hoyer says healthcare debate could go long

WASHINGTON, Nov. 6 (UPI) -- House debate on legislation to reform the U.S. healthcare system could extend beyond Saturday, House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer of Maryland said.

Hoyer said delaying tactics could prevent the vote from occurring as scheduled at 6 p.m. Saturday, The Hill reported Friday.

He also acknowledged the 218 votes necessary to pass the bill remain elusive, but "we're very close."

"Clearly, things happen," Hoyer said. "Delay tactics can be employed."

If debate goes extends past Saturday, Hoyer said, the House wouldn't reconvene until after noon on Sunday, and that Monday and Tuesday were available, the Washington publication reported.

Hoyer said earlier this week he was sure the representatives would vote before Wednesday, the Veterans Day holiday.
