BINGHAM, Utah, Nov. 3 (UPI) -- A Utah sheriff's deputy gunned down almost a century ago by an outlaw has been given a stone monument.

Many present-day Salt Lake County deputies attended the ceremony Monday at the Bingham cemetery where James Douglas Hulsey is buried, The Salt Lake Tribune reported. The service had many of the trappings of a military funeral, including a riderless horse and a volley fired by seven riflemen.

Salt Lake County Sheriff Jim Winder called the ceremony "bittersweet."

Robert Kirby, a former police officer turned Tribune columnist and a local historian, said Hulsey had one of the biggest funerals ever in Bingham after he was killed on Nov. 29, 1913. But the marker over his grave, probably wooden, was lost, and its exact site is not known.

Hulsey was one of five police officers shot dead by Red Lopez, a notorious outlaw who had shot a man in Bingham, Deputy Randy Lish said. Lish said he tracked Lopez down and discovered he was shot and killed in 1921 by Texas Ranger Frank Hamer, who became famous 13 years later for killing Bonnie and Clyde.
