Fla. rip currents claim Ind. man's life

ORMOND BEACH, Fla., Nov. 1 (UPI) -- An Indiana man died after a lifeguard pulled him out of waist-high water with strong rip currents off Ormond Beach, Fla., authorities said.

Philip Standley, 55, of Noblesville, Ind., received CPR and was taken by ambulance to a hospital after he and his brother were pulled from the water Saturday, the Daytona Beach (Fla.) News-Journal reported Sunday.

Standley was pronounced dead at the hospital and his brother, whose name was not reported, was hospitalized, Volusia County Beach Patrol Capt. Scott Petersohn, said.

"(The lifeguard) did the best she could. She's absolutely devastated," Petersohn said.

Swimmers, attracted by unseasonably warm weather, required 30 rescues by lifeguards in less than two hours Saturday. Standley's death is the fourth drowning this year on Volusia County's 47-mile stretch of beach, Petersohn said.
