Statue honors former Baltimore mayor

BALTIMORE, Oct. 30 (UPI) -- A 7-foot statue of William Schaefer was lifted by crane to a marble base at Harborplace in Baltimore, the city he served as mayor for 16 years.

The statue will be officially unveiled Monday, Schaefer's 88th birthday, the Baltimore Sun reported Friday. After the sculptor, Rodney Carroll, and his assistants fastened the statue to its base Thursday, it was covered with a box.

Schaefer's 52-year political career began on the Baltimore City Council and ended only two years ago when he stepped down as Maryland comptroller. He was mayor from 1971 to 1987 and governor from 1987 to 1995.

The statue and its surrounding garden were donated to the city by Willard Hackerman, a construction executive.

In the larger-than-life statue, Schaefer, dressed in a business suit, holds one of his "action memos." Carroll placed it so the former mayor is waving towards City Hall while facing the harbor.

"I'm really pleased with it," Carroll said. "The scale of the whole site is just wonderful."
