MOSCOW, Oct. 28 (UPI) -- U.S. National Security Adviser James Jones traveled to Russia Wednesday to negotiate a replacement to a nuclear disarmament treaty, officials said.
U.S. Barack Obama and Russian President Dmitry Medvedev hope to complete a successor treaty to the Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty due to expire in December. The latest round of talks took place in Geneva two weeks ago, Russian information agency Novosti reported.
"They're going to, I think, primarily to continue our discussions on renewing our START treaty... continue to make progress and get an agreement on something that we can sign this year to further cut the number of nuclear weapons that each side has," White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs said.
The two leaders reached agreement on parameters of the new pact during their bilateral summit in Moscow in July.
