Truck driver dies in N.C. crash

CHARLOTTE, N.C., Oct. 28 (UPI) -- A tractor-trailer driver was killed and some cattle the truck was hauling had to be destroyed after the truck crashed on a North Carolina highway, police said.

Lloyd Ware, the driver, lost control of the vehicle and drove it into a guardrail before it overturned and ran off I-85 near U.S. Rte. 29 just before 4 a.m. EDT Tuesday, The Charlotte (N.C.) Observer reported. A passenger in the truck, Joshua Steadman, sustained minor injuries and was treated at a hospital, the newspaper said.

About three dozen cattle were aboard the truck. Some of them died in the crash and some milled about the highway for several hours, the North Carolina Highway Patrol said.

"Several cows had to be put down," Sgt Garrett Barge said.

Authorities called in cowboys on horseback to try to round up the errant cattle, the newspaper said.

Ware was driving for Martin's Abbatoir Wholesale Meat Company in Godwin, N.C.
