College student alleges police brutality

SAN JOSE, Calif., Oct. 25 (UPI) -- San Jose, Calif., police say they're investigating officers who allegedly used a Taser on an unarmed college student and beat him while he was handcuffed.

A grainy cell phone video taken by a roommate of Phuong Ho, 20, a math major from Vietnam, appears to show officers repeatedly hitting Ho with a baton while he was face down on the floor of his home last month, The San Jose Mercury News reported Sunday.

Four officers were called to the home after Ho allegedly threatened another roommate with a knife.

Ho, a student at San Jose State, told the News he was joking about hurting the roommate and police allegedly used excessive force against him while he groping for his glasses, which had fallen off.

Ho faces charges of exhibiting a deadly weapon and resisting arrest. He was treated for Taser burns and several minor wounds, the Mercury News reported.

After watching the video, San Jose Police Assistant Chief Daniel Katz said he was taking the matter "very seriously" and would open an investigation into the officers' behavior.

The officers and their union representative declined to comment.
