WASHINGTON, Oct. 24 (UPI) -- U.S. Rep. Patrick Kennedy, D-R.I., should not be supporting healthcare reform that includes public funding for abortions, a bishop says.
Bishop Thomas J. Tobin of the Providence Diocese in Rhode Island also criticized Kennedy, son of the late U.S. Sen. Edward Kennedy, for recent comments the senator made regarding the Catholic Church's opposition to the abortion component, The Boston Globe reported Saturday.
"I can't understand for the life of me how the Catholic Church could be against the biggest social justice issue of our time, where the very dignity of the human person is being respected by the fact that we're caring and giving healthcare to the human person -- that right now we have 50 million people who are uninsured," Kennedy said in an article published Thursday.
Tobin countered Friday, saying the comments from Kennedy were "irresponsible and ignorant of the facts."
"But the congressman is correct in stating that he 'can't understand,'" Tobin added. "He got that part right."
The Globe said Tobin is seeking an apology from Kennedy, 42, for his remarks. A spokeswoman for the senator had no comment on the matter.
