SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico, Oct. 23 (UPI) -- Puerto Rico Gov. Luis Fortuno said at least one person was hurt and hundreds were evacuated following an explosion near San Juan early Friday.
CNN said in the wake of the early morning explosion at a fuel storage complex near the Puerto Rican capital, nearly 100 firefighters are attempting to contain fires at 11 fuel tanks at the facility.
Firefighters are also attempting to keep 29 additional tanks, which are filled with jet and diesel fuels and gasoline, cool to prevent further blazes.
The cause of the explosion is unknown, but an investigation into the incident is under way.
Justin Gehrke, a U.S. Army civilian employee in San Juan, told CNN the explosion at Caribbean Petroleum Corp. was so large it sent a mushroom cloud in the sky.
"I didn't expect to see a mushroom cloud from my house," he said of the incident, which prompted the evacuation of at least 350 people.
Firefighters told CNN it could take several days to fully contain the fires at the fuel storage facility.
