Body tentatively ID'd as Florida girl

ORANGE PARK, Fla., Oct. 22 (UPI) -- Authorities say they have tentatively identified a body found in a Georgia landfill as that of missing Florida girl Somer Thompson.

Clay County Sheriff Rick Besler told the (Jacksonville) Florida Times-Union that an autopsy would be performed Thursday to confirm the identity and try to determine the cause of death.

Remains believed to be those of the 7-year-old Orange Park, Fla., child were found in a Georgia landfill this week by deputies who followed the trucks that haul trash out of Orange Park.

Somer disappeared Monday while walking home from school. Deputies have admitted they have had few solid leads into her disappearance. Her mother identified clothing and a birthmark on the remains, ABC News said.

The Times-Union said around 200 neighbors and other supporters from the area gathered outside the girl's home Wednesday night while another 100 or so prayed at a nearby church.
