Wilders' appearance irks Temple students

PHILADELPHIA, Oct. 21 (UPI) -- The president of the Student Senate at Temple University says he was ashamed to have controversial Dutch politician Geert Wilders on campus.

Jeff Dempsey told The Philadelphia Inquirer Wilders had a "provocation of hate" that tarnished his school's reputation for tolerance.

Wilders has become known for anti-immigrant and anti-Islamic rhetoric but he was invited by a student organization that called efforts to block Wilders' appearance "censorship."

Despite the presence of counter-demonstrators, there were no immediate reports of trouble at Wilders' Tuesday night appearance, the newspaper said.
