Assistant Police Chief James Griffith of Palatka says the incident took place Monday night in a parking lot of a public housing project.

Griffith says Cummings was with two other young women, one of whose purses also was taken.

One of the women later told police the three had gone to the Ragsdale Apartment Complex to buy drugs, the Jacksonville (Fla.) Times-Union reported Wednesday.

Cummings was taking care of 5-year-old Misty Cummings in February when the child disappeared from her mobile home.

She later married Haleigh's father, Ronald, but the two have since divorced.
