SEATTLE, Oct. 21 (UPI) -- A 46-year-old man accused of shooting six women, killing one, at the Jewish Federation of Greater Seattle will face a jury for a second time, prosecutors say.
Prosecutors said since Naveed Haq's first trial on various criminal charges, including first-degree murder, ended with a mistrial due to a deadlocked jury, they have streamlined the charges to avoid a similar judicial result, The Seattle Times reported Wednesday.
Among the seven charges against Haq that prosecutors dropped in advance of his second trial, which was scheduled to start Wednesday, were five counts of malicious harassment.
Instead, Haq will face one count of aggravated first-degree murder, five counts of attempted first-degree murder, one count of unlawful imprisonment and one count of malicious harassment.
Seattlepi.com reported Haq is accused of entering the Jewish Federation of Greater Seattle July 28, 2006, and opening fire. Federation worker Pam Waechter was killed and five other women were injured.
Haq's attorneys allege their client experienced psychotic delusions, while prosecutors maintain the fatal shooting was motivated by hatred on the part of the murder suspect.
