NEW YORK, Oct. 21 (UPI) -- Police say a 92-year-old New York City woman was killed by a stray gunshot fired through her window during a gang rumble.

Neighbors told the New York Post a crowd of youths, many with baseball bats, descended on East 224th Street in the Bronx borough Tuesday evening.

A shot was fired at some point and it struck well-known resident Sadie Mitchell in the chest. She died a short time later at the same hospital where two youths injured in the brawl were being treated.

"My heart is broken," said one neighbor. "She was like a grandmother to me."

Mayor Michael Bloomberg said Wednesday that Mitchell's death illustrated the need to get guns off the streets of New York.
