PRINCETON, N.J., Oct. 21 (UPI) -- Most U.S. gun owners believe that U.S. President Barack Obama will attempt to ban the sale of all guns, a Gallup poll indicated Wednesday.

The new survey indicates that majorities of those who personally own a gun (55 percent) and of those with a gun in the household (53 percent), as well as 41 percent of all Americans, believe that Obama "will attempt to ban the sale of guns in the United States while he is president."

The pollsters said the survey's results help explain widespread reports of sharply increased sales of firearms and ammunition in the wake of Obama's presidential victory last November.

Although Obama has never said, either on the campaign trail or after taking office, that he intends to push for a ban on the sale of all guns, many of the reports suggested that the reason behind the increased sales is the belief that the president intends to severely curtail the legal availability of guns and ammunition, Gallup said.

The results were based on interviews with 1,013 adults between Oct. 1-4. The maximum margin of sampling error was set at 4 percentage points.
