JOLIET, Ill., Oct. 20 (UPI) -- People living near a former meat-processing plant in Joliet, Ill., that was raided Sunday say officials aren't telling them much about what went on there.
A team of FBI agents, joined by Immigration and Custom Agency personnel and Grundy County, Ill., sheriff's police raided First World Management Services. About 100 officers took part in the raid -- some wearing what witnesses described as similar to U.S. National Guard uniforms, the Joliet Herald-News reported Tuesday.
FBI spokesman Ross Rice said the raid was carried out under a U.S. District Court warrant.
"There have been no arrests as a result of this raid." Rice said.
Men apparently dressed in Middle Eastern garb were seated in front of buildings at the plant, surrounded by people with guns, witnesses said. The men were subsequently released.
The Herald-News said there was speculation the plant was used for slaughter of goats and sheep to produce meat that conforms to Muslim dietary customs.
"This kind of thing has never happened here before. It is scary to think what could be involved," a resident who refused to be identified said.
