Kicker Reed charged with resisting arrest

PITTSBURGH, Oct. 19 (UPI) -- Pittsburgh Steelers kicker Jeff Reed was arrested after threatening an officer who was giving a citation to teammate Matt Spaeth, police said.

Police said Reed raised his fists to officers as they started to issue a citation to Spaeth, 25, a tight end, for urinating in public Sunday in the parking lot of McFadden's, a Pittsburgh restaurant and bar, the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reported.

"The officers told him several times to get back in the vehicle, but he did not listen. He smelled of a strong odor of alcohol and appeared to be intoxicated," a police sergeant said.

Police tackled and cuffed Reed at the scene of the incident, the sergeant said.

Reed, 30, was charged with simple assault and resisting arrest. He was also cited for disorderly conduct and public intoxication.

Both players were released at the scene. No court dates had been set.

A few hours earlier, Reed kicked two field goals in a 27-14 Steelers defeat of the Cleveland Browns at Heinz Field in Pittsburgh. McFadden's is across a parking lot from the stadium.

Steelers spokesman Dave Lockett said team officials were "still gathering information" on the incident.

Reed joined the Steelers in November 2002.
