Cuban spies in U.S. disinformation plot

MIAMI, Oct. 19 (UPI) -- Cuban spies waged a "disinformation" campaign against the United States in the months after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attack, a Miami newspaper says.

The Spanish language El Nuevo Herald says 20 Cubans walked into U.S. embassies worldwide in the six months after the attacks, offering information on intended terrorist threats. After long investigations, it was determined that all were Cuban espionage agents intent on sending U.S. intelligence resources on wild goose chases.

Former U.S. government experts on Cuba have told the Herald that the "walk-ins" were part of a long-standing Havana effort, beginning before 9/11 and continuing since, that sent Cuban spies into U.S. embassies to mislead, confuse and even penetrate U.S. intelligence agencies.

"The Cubans periodically used walk-ins to continue to test U.S. capabilities and reactions, but . . . later approaches were not as frequent as we saw in the immediate wake of the Sept. 11 attacks," explained a former top Bush administration official.
