1 million protest easing abortion law

MADRID, Oct. 17 (UPI) -- More than 1 million people joined a march in Madrid Saturday to protest an effort to make Spain's law on abortion less restrictive, organizers said.

Every Life Matters, as the demonstration was called, was supported by the Roman Catholic Church and conservative political parties, the BBC reported. Other marches were held around the country.

Under current law, adopted in 1985, abortion is legal in cases of sexual assault, when continuing a pregnancy would endanger a woman's life or health and when tests show a fetus has abnormalities.

The bill protesters oppose would allow women to have abortions for any reason and would let 16- and 17-year-olds end pregnancies without parental consent.

The proposed changes have been introduced and are being considered by parliament.

The government of Socialist Prime Minister Jose Zapotero says changing the law would make abortions safer by making late-term procedures rare.
