Atlanta cops to beef up campus presence

ATLANTA, Oct. 13 (UPI) -- Atlanta police will respond to a rash of assaults and robberies on two college campuses with more officers, the city's police chief said Tuesday.

Police Chief Richard Pennington's announcement that he would beef up patrols at Georgia Tech and Atlanta University Center came the same day a Morehouse College student was shot in the arm as he walked home from the private school's library, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported.

The student was treated at a hospital and released, Pennington said.

It wasn't reported whether additional security would be put in place at Morehouse.

The robbers target students to get their cell phones, computers, backpacks and MP3 players, Pennington said.

"Students need to be mindful of their surroundings and to try to walk in groups," the chief said, adding that many of the attacks occur late at night or in the early morning within a few blocks of the campuses.
