Media summit urges fair, impartial news

BEIJING, Oct. 11 (UPI) -- Journalists attending the World Media Summit in Beijing have called for more fair and impartial coverage of the news.

A joint statement issued Saturday said representatives of 170 worldwide media organizations at the three-day summit agreed that "accurate, objective, impartial and fair" news coverage was needed to promote the transparency and accountability of governments and public institutions, the state-owned Chinese news agency Xinhua reported.

The attendees also reportedly said news gatherers should promote mutual understanding by exchanging views and ideas among peoples from different countries and regions, especially in an era of profound changes brought about by economic globalization, the information explosion and new communication technologies, the news agency said.

The summit was a joint proposal of Xinhua, News Corp., The Associated Press, Reuters, ITAR-TASS, Kyodo, BBC, Turner Broadcasting System and Google.
