Tropical Depression Henri fizzles

MIAMI, Oct. 8 (UPI) -- Atlantic Tropical Depression Henri was expected to dissipate late Thursday without making any Caribbean landfall, U.S. forecasters in Miami said.

The U.S. National Hurricane Center said at 5 a.m.EDT, the poorly organized depression was about 165 miles northeast of the northern Leeward Islands, moving north-northwest near 15 mph.

The system's sustained winds were 35 mph with higher gusts.

Henri developed somewhat unexpectedly Tuesday afternoon as a tropical storm, but forecasters anticipated it would be short-lived when it encountered another system in the area that would prevent strengthening.

"Henri is likely to degenerate into a remnant low within the next 24 hours," Thursday morning's forecast said.

Meanwhile, Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic and Haiti were likely to see rainfall and higher surf conditions Friday through Sunday as the depression petered out.
