Wash. teens allegedly hurt making bomb

YELM, Wash., Oct. 5 (UPI) -- Fire officials in Thurston County, Wash., say three area teens were injured while attempting to make a homemade bomb out of fireworks.

Southeast Thurston Fire and Emergency Medical Services said a plastic bag the teens were using to construct the homemade bomb exploded as the one of the teens attempted to add a fuse to the device Saturday, The Olympian of Olympia, Wash., reported.

The unidentified 15-year-old boy who had been holding the bag at the time of the explosion suffered severe injuries to his face, hands and chest.

The other teens, whose names and ages were not reported, each suffered facial injuries and hearing loss.

"It has been horrible. That was the fifth airlift since Tuesday," Southeast Thurston Fire and EMS Fire Chief Rita Hutcheson said of the 15-year-old who was airlifted to a Seattle hospital Saturday.

The Olympian said the bomb explosion in Thurston County came in the wake of a house fire Thursday that left twin 9-year-old girls from Yelm, Wash., hospitalized.

Meanwhile, a traffic accident in Yelm on Tuesday left two 16-year-old girls with injuries requiring both teens to be airlifted to a Seattle hospital.
