Mother seeks sperm donor's name

BOSTON, Oct. 5 (UPI) -- A Massachusetts woman whose twin daughters have health issues has gone to court to force a sperm bank to disclose the name of the father, authorities said.

The 35-year-old woman, identified only as Jane Doe, said the New England Cryogenic Center in Newton, Mass., assured her a medical student dubbed D237 would agree to have contact with her children if she bought his sperm, The Boston Herald said in an exclusive story published Monday.

Doe, who became pregnant in 2000, told the Herald one of her daughters has inherited a growth disorder while the other daughter was born with too few sweat glands.

The twins have "potentially fatal health issues" and deserve to know their father, Doe said in her case filed in Suffolk Probate and Family Court.

Sperm bank officials told the Herald D237 never agreed to be identified and they never promised Doe any contact with him, beyond the sperm.

Massachusetts law does not define a sperm donor's responsibilities to his offspring, the Herald reported.
