Tyrannosaurus rex fails to sell at auction

LAS VEGAS, Oct. 4 (UPI) -- A partial, fossilized Tyrannosaurus rex skeleton at a Las Vegas hotel was not sold at auction because bids were too low, an auction house official says.

Thomas Lindgren, co-director of natural history auctions for Bonhams and Butterfields, said the minimum price was not met Saturday for the dinosaur remains that have called The Venetian Resort-Hotel-Casino home for the last two weeks, The Las Vegas Sun reported.

The high bid for the Tyrannosaurus rex, nicknamed Samson, was $3.6 million. The minimum price for the historical remains was not reported.

Samson represents the third most complete Tyrannosaurus skeleton discovered to date, the Sun reported.

Despite the fact that the Tyrannosaurus rex remains failed to sell at Saturday's auction, Bonhams and Butterfields did succeed in auctioning off more than $1.7 million worth of dinosaur fossils.

In addition, Lindgren told the Sun that Samson could soon be sold to a new owner since multiple interested parties contacted his company with offers for the fossilized remains prior to the auction.
