EU presses Guinea on further political reforms

BRUSSELS, Dec. 12 (UPI) -- European foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton said Thursday the government of Guinea needs to commit itself to establishing a stable political future.

Ashton said the European Union recognized Guinea's parliamentary elections in September as a testament to democracy.

"It is important that the Guinean authorities now commit themselves to wide-ranging discussions on the electoral framework with a view to speedy introduction of the reforms necessary for the forthcoming elections to be held," she said in a statement issued from Brussels.

Guineans in September voted for members of a new Parliament to replace the transitional leadership in place since military rule ended in 2010. Presidential elections are set for 2015.

The European Council said the Guinean vote meant it had fulfilled the conditions for the resumption of diplomatic ties to the European Union, which were severed by coup.

Opposition leaders accused those loyal to President Alpha Conde of rigging the election. At least one person was killed and 70 others were injured on Election Day.

The country's high court upheld the election results last month.
