UNITED NATIONS, Sept. 25 (UPI) -- Liberia has come a long way since the end of civil war, notably with its economy, but still has a long way to go on the road to recovery, its president said.
Liberian President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf addressed delegates at the 68th session of the U.N. General Assembly.
The U.N. Security Council last week passed a unanimous resolution to extend the mandate for the U.N. Mission in Liberia for another year. The U.N. Mission in Liberia is ensuring the sustainability of a 2003 cease-fire ending a civil war in the country that left around 150,000 people dead.
Sirleaf said in her address during the afternoon session Tuesday, the "resilience of the Liberian people" has translated to post-civil war gains. Two democratic elections and a growing economy were testament to the success, she said.
"Liberia has come a long way, but we know that we have an even longer way to go," she said.
The Security Council said in its resolution last week Liberia has made progress on the political front, though criminal and national security challenges remained.
"[We] still have much more to do in consolidating the culture of integrity and accountability in a society that is still beset by values occasioned by years of conflict," the president said.
