No plans for U.S. talks, Iran says

TEHRAN, Sept. 11 (UPI) -- There are no plans to meet with U.S. officials on the sidelines of the meeting for the U.N. General Assembly, the Iranian foreign minister said Wednesday.

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani is scheduled to deliver an address before the U.N. General Assembly during its 68th annual session, which starts Sept. 17.

Rouhani said he was interested in moving forward with nuclear negotiations started this year by his predecessor, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

The International Atomic Energy Agency said this week it couldn't rule out a military dimension to Iran's nuclear program. Washington and its European allies suspect Iran is working on a weapons program, an allegation Tehran denies.

Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said Wednesday there were no plans to meet with U.S. officials on the sidelines of the U.N. General Assembly meeting next week, the semiofficial Fars News Agency reported.

"If the political resolve exists for the settlement of problems, we will be ready to hold talks [with Washington] in this regard, but within the framework of the P5+1," he said.

Two rounds of negotiations in Kazakhstan between Iran and the five permanent members of the U.N. Security Council plus Germany were described as amicable but yielded few breakthroughs.
