Jeb Bush visits Chinese officials

BEIJING, Aug. 21 (UPI) -- The U.S. and Chinese governments should continue to work on long-term venues for cooperation, an official told visiting former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush.

Chinese Vice Premier Zhang Gaoli met Wednesday with the former Florida governor to express his optimism about the state of affairs between two of the world's leading superpowers.

"The two sides should continue to work on strengthening dialogue and cooperation in various areas so as to advance China-U.S. relations along the track of sustained growth," Zhang was quoted by the official Xinhua News Agency as saying.

There was no indication why the former governor was in Beijing. Chinese leaders said when Bush was in Beijing last year his family made "great contributions" to promoting a stable relationship between the U.S. and Chinese governments.

Chinese Defense Minister Chang Wanquan is meeting this week in Washington with high-ranking defense officials. Xinhua reported U.S. National Security Adviser Susan Rice said Tuesday both sides would work on bilateral exchanges, including at the military level.

China is suspected of launching cyberattacks on U.S. strategic interests. It denies the allegation, saying its military relationship with the United States is open and transparent.
