British envoy to Yemen back to work

SANAA, Yemen, Aug. 19 (UPI) -- British Ambassador to Yemen Jane Marriot said Monday she hoped to see all of Yemen's negotiating partners back at the bargaining table soon.

The British and German embassies opened last weekend in Sanaa. The opening comes less than three weeks after the U.S. State Department announced its regional embassies were closed because of a threat from al-Qaida against Western interests.

Marriot said the security situation in Yemen was precarious, though the embassy was open for regular services Sunday.

"The security situation and the high threat from terrorism and kidnap continues to make it extremely dangerous for British nationals," she said in a statement. "I hope that, with national dialogue and a willingness by all parties in Yemen to work for the security, stability and economic success of their country, that will eventually change."

She used her official Twitter account Monday to announce she met with members of the transitional justice system in Sanaa.

"Hope all parties [are] back at [the] table soon," she said.

U.S. Ambassador Gerald Feierstein met last week in Sanaa with Yemeni officials. The U.S. Embassy in Sanaa, however, remains closed.
