TRIPOLI, Libya, July 26 (UPI) -- An attack on the embassy of the United Arab Emirates in Tripoli was a criminal act meant to harm Libya's foreign relations, Libyan officials said Friday.
The Emirati embassy was hit by a rocket-propelled grenade Thursday. No injuries were reported in the attack though the embassy building in western Tripoli suffered minor damage.
The Libyan Foreign Ministry condemned the attack, saying unknown assailants were working to harm Libya's relationship with neighbors supporting revolution in 2011.
Libya has struggled to maintain a sense of national security since a new government took office in the wake of the revolution. The country's oil sector has been the target of frequent insurgent attacks and the U.S. ambassador to Libya died in a terrorist attack on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi in September.
The International Committee of the Red Cross said it was working with the Libyan Red Crescent to help Libyans establish a sense of normalcy despite the instability.
"Clashes have occasionally been flaring up in tense parts of the country, sometimes resulting in the displacement of thousands of people who seek safety in neighboring areas," Katharina Ritz, head of the ICRC delegation in Libya, said in a statement.
